Good To Know

What to expect from your first few weeks

Hormone therapy is safe and effective for most women who need it. Many patients feel improvements in sleep, mood, hot flashes, and brain fog within the first few weeks, with the bigger effects settling in over a couple of months. Some patients notice mild breast tenderness, light spotting, or occasional headaches early on, and those usually settle as the body adjusts.

Compounded estradiol and progesterone are prepared in a Texas-licensed 503A pharmacy. The active ingredients are identical to FDA-approved branded versions, but compounded medications are not themselves FDA-approved as finished products.

Common Questions

What patients often ask.

How do I know if I need HRT?
If you're experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes, brain fog, joint pain, vaginal dryness, or libido changes in your 40s or beyond, HRT may help. Joy reviews symptoms and labs together to determine fit.
Oral or cream, which is better?
Both are effective. Cream tends to avoid first-pass liver metabolism, which some women prefer. Oral is straightforward and convenient. Many women take progesterone orally at bedtime and estradiol as a cream. Joy will recommend the format she thinks works best for you.
Do I have to take both estradiol and progesterone?
If you have an intact uterus and are on estradiol, you should also take progesterone to protect against endometrial overgrowth. If you've had a hysterectomy, you can take estradiol alone. We discuss this at the consult.
How long can I stay on HRT?
There is no fixed maximum duration. Modern guidance is that women can continue HRT for as long as the benefits outweigh the risks for them individually, with periodic reassessment.
Do I have to live in Houston to enroll?
No. This service is delivered by telehealth, so any Texas resident can enroll. You'll meet Joy by secure video visit, and your medication ships from a partner pharmacy directly to your door.
How does my medication get to me?
After your first visit, Joy sends your prescription to a Houston-based partner pharmacy. They ship directly to your door, typically within 1-3 business days (refrigerated overnight shipping is used for any medication that requires it). Shipping is billed separately at checkout and appears on every refill.
Do you take insurance?
Nuovara Health is a cash-pay practice, which means you pay us directly at the time of service. We don't bill insurance. The advantage is transparent pricing and no insurance-driven restrictions on your care. Some prescriptions can still run through your insurance at your local pharmacy.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours notice on any cancellation. Cancellations or reschedules inside the 24-hour window are subject to a $50 fee. Mobile no-shows are charged the full visit fee because supplies and travel are already committed. We're a small practice and this protects time for the patients who need it.
